Margie Griggs

Is a Printmaker based in Chicago

Margie Griggs is a printmaker who most often uses silkscreen printing to convey her observations of the natural world from plants to birds to animals. She captures her own memories with each of the organisms she observes to allow others to see what she sees. She feels deeply connected with the lives she studies because she has learned how precious and delicate environments are. She believes the role of art is to create an outlet for what we feel and experience in the world around us. Art is the only way she can decipher and begin to understand her memories and experiences with nature. She invites others to join in exploring nature and encourages people to be curious about the creatures and organisms we see each day.

Summer of Change at LaBagh by Margie Griggs

LaBagh Woods consists of wooded landscapes, wetlands, savannas, and sedge meadows with the North Branch River passing through in turn providing an ideal location for bird species. Growing up in North Mayfair, I have walked the trails of LaBagh hundreds of times and have watched the area slowly change. I have watched the train tracks slowly disappear, the North Branch Trail come to life, and the hard work of the LaBagh Wood North Branch Restoration Project create an inviting space for all species. The slough at LaBagh is an ideal spot for bird species, but this summer is when I noticed one of the largest changes I had seen in the slough due to the drought that affected the Chicagoland area. The drought dried up the slough completely and turned it into a field of barnyard grass which directly impacted the birds here.
